A high security research and development facility usually is a very high demanding and challenging project. The design and construction is unusual and extraordinary. The facilities we have handled are typically built in an envelope style. Nothing at the perimeter of the building is in contact with the finish product. All areas of the building and grounds, used and unused, from the perimeter corridor, raised floor, and a space above the ceilings, are all monitored with three levels of security, motion and infrared detectors, and cameras. The highly sensitive areas are sound proof (UL rated), with different measures that relegate surveillance equipment useless. All doors are sound rated with three levels of security entry. All movement is computer monitored. All mechanical and electrical systems and equipment are monitored. The facility is also equipped with a UPS system and emergency generator backup power source.
One challenge in these types of facilities is emergency egress from a life safety standpoint. With the security level and monitoring, escape routes and site distances still had to be incorporated in the design while keeping the high security level intact.
Confidentiality is the rule with this type of project.
